Re: Iron Man:

Yes, actually, that was quite a lot of fun, despite the villain of the piece having all the depth and personality of a piece of typing paper, and both things were due pretty much entirely to how much depth and personality got lavished on Tony Stark--I WANT TO SQUEEZE HIM.

I-I think that's the first movie I've seen since... August? And yes, I stayed past the credits and then got squee on everything. Also I totally teared up during the preview for the new Indiana Jones movie. I don't even care if it's probably going to suck by the numbers. Iconic movie themes make me go all A BLOO BLOO BLOO.

There seemed to be some sort of inverse proportion at work: as Stane's motivations became more ridiculous and vapid, Stark seemed all the more bitter/sardonic/occasionally vulnerable/real by contrast.

I've never been so satisfied by a comic book movie in my life.

And the minute the Apogee Awards slotted him neatly into the Prince Regent/Grand Vizier trope, I knew he was going to be EEEEEEVIL. The only thing I wasn't sure of was exactly how evil he was going to turn out to be, and the answer was 'pretty darned'.

I'm so glad that they're figuring out how to make comic-book movies work for modern audiences. I really am.

I knew he was going to be evil as soon as I saw his shiny bald head.

I can't decide whether to be excited or unspeakably depressed by the Indiana Jones thing. I mean, on the one hand, Indiana Jones! Yay! But on the other... George Lucas. Inverse proportion of size of neck to quality of movies. Neck is pretty damned big nowadays.

The one thing that I felt they dropped the ball on was the motivations on Stane. I don't mind him being eeeeeeeeeevil, honestly, I just want to know why he chose to try to off Stark at that point. My theory: mostly opportunity, being as he was conveniently out where he could be taken out without questions coming up, and that Stark had already started to take some actual interest in other aspects of his company than R&D. It really doesn't make sense for Stane to take out his carefully cultivated golden goos unless Stark was already showing signs of noticing things he shouldn't. But considering that was the only thing they dropped the ball on, script-wise, imma call it a win!

And, man, I am so exicted about Indy. I am hoping that Shia LaBeouf makes the sucking by the numbers a little more entertaining at least.

I do not intend to see the movie (SHOCK!).

But. I must note that this morning, while I was being a good worker Ingrid, my lawyer bosses were discussing Iron Man and his comic book history over by their offices.

/I think I may work for dorks/.

I hadn't realized until the pre-Ironman trailer that Karen Allen was going to be in the next Indiana Jones movie. Marion was definitely the most interesting of Indy's female companions, so I'm happy to see her back again.

No movies since August? Sheesh... you can't let this cancer business distract you from your priorities like that.

I'm just spasming in joy that my kid is finally old enough to start going to movies with me. I've been in bitter withdrawal for the past four years. Last year, I had to take vacation days just so my wife and I could go see some of the must-see summer movies.
